The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has expressed concern over the proposed creation of a Media Protection Commission in Lithuania. According to the IFJ, the current amendments to the 1996 Lithuanian law on the media will allow the country's politicians to impose censorship and "exert an undue amount of control or influence" over journalists and the media. The IFJ states that ethical standards should be enforced through self-regulation, a process which Lithuania appeared to have adopted in 1996 and which will be altered if the new law comes into effect.
